Putting On The Ritz

The renowned engineering firm of Israel Berger was called in to check the structural condition of the Ritz Tower Hotel in Manhattan, N.Y.C. After many years of reliable service, the building overall was in good shape but required something of a face lift.

As is common in buildings of this age, it was found to be suffering from some fractures and splits in the terracotta facade which were unsightly and in danger of violating Local Law 10. After considering various means of resolving the problem, Israel Berger specified the Helifix DryFix tie system to be used in a number of areas.

Versatile DryFix Ties were used to secure the terracotta facing to the multi wythe brick back-up, reinforce weak areas of masonry, stitch across cracks and tie back loose pieces of terracotta to prevent them breaking loose.

As it uses only a small hole and no expansion or chemicals to achieve a sound fixing, the DryFix system is ideal for the repair of fragile terracotta, which is likely to fracture using other methods.
